Maureen Long BA (Hons) MBACP (Accred)
Most of us will struggle at times in some area of our life. We all have to face varying degrees of difficulties and both current and past experiences can shape the way we respond to these situations. We may find ourselves suffering with problems such as anxiety, stress, panic attacks, depression, anger issues, low self esteem, loneliness and relationship problems. Ways of coping may have developed which enable a person to manage but they can become controlling and sometimes quite destructive. These can include addictions, OCD, eating disorders or self harm. Also life can present some difficult challenges such as coming to terms with the loss of a loved one, redundancy, divorce or illness which also can affect our ability to cope.
Counselling provides a space in which to explore any such issues enabling you to acknowledge the impact of events, either current or past, recognise the emotions that these have caused and consequently gain an understanding of your reactions. In doing this, a person grows in self-awareness and is able to find their own inner resources to bring about change and to live a more healthy and fulfilling life.
I am an integratively trained counsellor based in Horley, covering Surrey Sussex areas. My approach to counselling is to create a non-judgmental, safe and confidential setting to talk about your problems and to help to turn them into opportunities to grow stronger. I work with some creative exercises which can be helpful in accessing the unconscious mind and may integrate aspects of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which is helpful in understanding thought-processes.
I have run my own practice for the last 9 years and prior to this worked in an agency setting. I have also worked in a voluntary capacity in the out-patients counselling dept at Burrswood, a local non-surgical hospital. Currently I also currently work as an Affiliate Counsellor for an Employee Assistance Programme Provider providing short-term counselling of between 5-8 sessions.
I am a Licensed Practitioner for The Understanding Your Eating Programme which is a psycho-education programme that addresses the psychological aspects to eating, particularly focusing on over-eating and binging. It builds self awareness on how people use food to manage emotions and offers hope for a permanent change in your relationship with food. It provides the opportunity to explore why and how this pattern of coping was established and also suggests strategies that may help you to find more healthy alternatives. I can deliver the programme either through one-to-one counselling or in a group setting.
I am an Accredited Registered Member of BACP and adhere to their code of practice and ethics. In line with all qualified counsellors I undertake regular monthly supervision.
I am committed to continued professional development to keep abreast of current thinking and new initiatives.
