Profile

I am a qualified BACP Accredited UKRCP Registered and Relate trained Relationship/Couple Counsellor in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. I work with both couples and individuals.

I work in a truly collaborative way with you where by I see us working through issues in the counselling process in order to understand and make sense of them. Often couples in particular are concerned about difference in their relationship but I feel that difference is good and should therefore be celebrated. The difficulty is usually around how it is managed and accommodated but once acknowledged, this I think, allows for the possibility for change.

I always take time to acknowledge your bravery in taking the initial decision to come to counselling as it is not an easy option and can be a very painful process. The time spent in the sessions will enable you to look at yourself and your relationships in a different and healthier way. I want to enable you to have new tools and strategies for managing your lives and to make informed decisions regarding your future. In other words I hope to allow you to be in a place of certainty or perhaps safe uncertainty which is often a more comfortable place to be.

I work with a variety of theories and my experience has informed me that systemic ideas and questioning can promote change and create difference. I like the concept particularly of curiosity and feel that part of my work is around enabling you also to be curious and to ask questions about yourselves as individuals and to help you make sense of your relationships. I feel that you can make use of your wider systems in terms of family and friends as it is perhaps unrealistic to imagine that your partner can meet all your needs and expectations.

Psychodynamic theories suggest that the past impacts on the present and I feel that it is important to explore the past not in a blaming way but to see if you, having made sense of the past, perhaps wants to put it in a container and put a lid on it. Maybe that allows for the present and the future to be different.

I offer brief and long term counselling and it is important for me to reflect on the counselling process at regular intervals to be certain that you find the process helpful. I will ask what has been useful and perhaps what could be better or different and I feel that this is an ethical way of working. If I do not have the expertise to help you I will refer you to another professional or agency.Sometimes where appropriate I might suggest a task or a book between sessions.

A great deal of my work centres around the issue of loss e.g. the end of a relationship, affair, separation or divorce. I liken this to the cycle of grief, not in a prescriptive way, but in terms of the emotions felt and the sorrow box that remains .Loss is sometimes described as the absence of presence. Where there has been an affair Its a way of understanding that you may forgive but maybe not forget.

Finally I am passionate about my work as a counsellor, and feel privileged to be a part of the journey you are making in your life.
