I am a qualified BACP Accredited Registered Counsellor. .
I work with individuals with anxiety, depression,OCD ,self harming and bereavement.I help if cients have low self esteem ,self wortth and self confidence and explore feelings like shame, anger, guilt and blame.I do also have a background of working in Psychiatry and work closely with Psychiatrist who reguarly refers clients to me.
I also specialise i working with young people over the age of 16 and trained as a Young Peoples Counsellor at Relate
I am a Relate trained counsellor and have a Post Graduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy With relationship counselling I see individuals who want to explore the impact and meaning of an affair, communication difficulties- are there assumptions being made or unhealthy patterns?, jealousy, the ending of a relationship, separation or divorce,You may have difficulties committing or move from one relationship to another and want to make sense of that.We will look at your needs and expectaions and then explore your hopes and fears for the future of your relationships.
I work in a truly collaborative way with you where by I see us working through issues in the counselling process in order to understand and make sense of them in a neutral space and be able to to put your point across in a heard and safe environment. Its about clearing barriers and having the potential to re-write your story .
I always take time to acknowledge your bravery in taking the initial decision to come to counselling as it is not an easy option and can be a very painful process. The time spent in the sessions will enable you to look at yourself and your relationships in a different and healthier way.I can't guarantee that you will leave me singing ang dancing into the sunset but I will try and enable you to have new tools and strategies for managing your life and to make informed decisions regarding your future. In other words I hope to allow you to effect change and to be in a place of certainty or perhaps safe uncertainty, which is often a more comfortable place to be.
I work with a variety of theories and see myself as an Intergrative Therapist.
My experience has informed me that systemic ideas and questioning can promote change and create difference. I like the concept particularly of curiosity and feel that part of my work is around enabling you also to be curious and to ask questions about yourselves as individuals and to help you make sense of your relationships. I feel that you can make use of your wider systems in terms of family and friends as it is perhaps unrealistic to imagine that your partner can meet all your needs and expectations.
Psychodynamic theories suggest that the past impacts on the present and I feel that it is important to explore the past and childhood not in a blaming way but to see if you, having made sense of the past, maybe want to put it in a container and put a lid on it or learn strategies to externalsie rather than internalise. Maybe that allows for the present and the future to be different.
I am trained in CBT-looking at how your thoughts impact your behaviour and Solution Focused Therapy-goal setting and focusing on solveable problems.
I work with Mindfulness which simply means awareness-' living in the moment, notice what is happening and make choices in how you respond to your experience rather than being driven by habitual reactions'- Vidyamala Burch
I offer brief and long term counselling and it is important for me to reflect on the counselling process at regular intervals to be certain that you find the process helpful. I will ask what has been useful and perhaps what could be better or different and I feel that this is an ethical way of working. If I do not have the expertise to help you I will refer you to another professional or agency.Sometimes where appropriate I might suggest a task or a book between sessions.
A great deal of my work centres around the issue of loss e.g.bereavement, the end of a relationship, loss of a job, an affair, separation or divorce. I work with the cycle of grief, not in a prescriptive way, but in terms of the emotions felt and the sorrow box that remains. Loss is sometimes described as' the absence of presence'. Where there has been an affair its a way of perhaps understanding that you may be able to forgive or not but that realistically you are unlikely to forget what has happened but can perhaps reach a place of acceptance.
I will look to increase your self worth, confidence and self esteem and empower you by reducing the need for compartmentalising behaviours , self sabotaging and internalising unhelpful feelings. We will look to answer or at least try and understand the questions ; Who am I ? Where am I? Where do I want to be? What are the resourses within and around me that I can use and what is stopping me?
If you leave me with the tools and strategies to manage your lives in a different way then I feel that I have done my job.
Finally I am passionate about my work as a counsellor, and feel privileged to be a part of the journey you are making in your life.
