About me

My fees are based on a sliding scale from £15 to £50 so that cost is not a barrier to obtaining counselling. I have forty years experience of supporting people through difficult times, twenty years as a qualified counsellor. My aim is to work in partnership with clients, providing a safe space in which to explore and develop a greater awareness of self, hence discovering heightened abilities to manage life issues.

Training, qualifications & experience

Advanced Diploma in Counselling, Manchester University 1995
Diploma in Supervision PCCS 1999
Hons Degree Open University 1993
Qualification in Social Work 1975

I am currently Professional Governance Lead (part-time) for a long established charity. The  teams I work with provide counselling in GP surgeries, a Children and Families Bereavement Support  Service and support for families caring for a child with a life limiting condition. My previous experience includes teaching on Counselling Courses through to qualifying level, working as a social worker in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. In the latter I was a member of a Family Therapy team and developed skills using play and creative techniques whilst supporting children and young people. I have been a foster carer and fostering officer and am particularly interested in attachment issues as they effect carers as well as children and adults. My work as a counsellor has included supporting those living with depression and anxiety, grief and loss, the effects of childhood and adult abuse, plus multi-cultural and spiritual issues.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I work with clients from five years of age and have a current Enhanced DBS check.
As an experienced foster carer and social worker I have personal and professional insight into difficulties experienced by Looked After Children and those who support them.

On a sliding scale according to ability to pay ranging from £15 to £50 per hour session. First meeting is free.

Further information

My work is based on Humanistic theories and philosophy. My training has also provided  an understanding of other perspectives including CBT, Transactional Analysis, Psycho- dynamic and Personal Construct theories. I am happy to explore any of these with clients if you feel they will aid your personal understanding and ability to make changes. I work in New Mills but will consider home visits if disability or caring responsibilities make travelling difficult. In addition to my work with adults I have a great deal of experience with teenagers and younger children, especially in respect of bereavement and loss.

I am an active participant of a full member group of the Independent Practitioners Network, IPN, which accredits my practise and I am registered with the Health and Care Professional Council.
