Profile

My interest in counselling and psychotherapy began over 30 years ago when I used to practice as a general nurse, and midwife. I noticed that the patients who were emotionally unsettled took longer to heal than those who were contented and at ease with themselves, and I wanted to know how to help them more effectively.

I embarked on counselling training in 1980, and since then have studied Person Centred Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Psychotherapy, Transactional Analysis, Integrative Psychotherapy, and Clinical Supervision. I currently completing my training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.

In sessions - if you find this helpful - I explain basic theory, using charts or drawings as this feels appropriate as well as drawing on the many resources and skills that I have available to enable your recovery.

I offer a respectful, non judgmental, and ethically based professional service. Many people come just knowing that they are unhappy, that something is wrong, while others have a clear sense of their problem. Which ever way you feel, you are welcome to contact me to arrange an exploratory session.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

For many years I have helped people who have suffered the distresses of emotional and physical neglect, harm and trauma in childhood. These injuries may have been of a sexual, physical or spiritual nature, or all of these mixed together, and may have ocurred in the close or wider family, at school or boarding school. Damage can even occur in religious settings.

Sometimes the 'emotional scar tissue' from early traumas only truly surface in adulthood when crisis occur, and quite frequently around middle age when life changes take place. The good news is that with patient and careful therapy substantial healing and recovery can take place.

The brain is amazingly creative and regenerative, and is able to repair damaged nerve systems which can be caused by emotional trauma especially in childhood. In fact the brain goes on mending itself (when it has the right conditions of safety and support), right into very old age!

Because our emotional system is intricately woven into our physical and nervous systems, we know that when one begins to mend, the other parts do as well, leading to greater emotional health and stability, and often a growth in physical health too. It is worth remembering that where damage has been caused in unsafe relationships, healing can be found in trustworthy relationships, and this is what I aim to offer in this practice.

I have considerable experience in working with people who have suffered the traumas of car or other transport accidents, natural disasters or workplace violence or accidents. (You will find a list of issues that I treat towards the end of this page).
