About me

A fully accredited therapist, I offer counselling to individuals and couples from my consulting room in Histon. I also work as a family consultant and mediator helping clients negotiate their way through divorce or separation.

My work with clients has focused on many different issues including low self esteem, relationship breakdown, divorce, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, workplace problems, procrastination, family concerns and bereavement. I have a particular interest in helping my clients improve their relationships through exploring the ways in which they communicate – be that in the couple relationship, within the family, with friends or in the workplace.

My approach to counselling is very simple – I believe wholeheartedly in the relationship between client and therapist - that a relationship based on trust and non judgement provides the right condition for change. I see my role as facilitative, walking along side as you find your own answers in a warm, supportive but sometimes challenging environment. I provide a safe, confidential space in which you can explore present or past difficulties, express your thoughts and feelings and think about the way forward.

My main theoretical approach is psychodynamic, based on the belief that current distress often has its origins in early relationships and experiences. The exploration of the dynamics in the relationship between us helps me understand more about your previous and current relationships, how you react and how you might be experienced in the outside world. Once self awareness develops and deepens, we can begin to think about how you can make changes in your life or relationships. When appropriate, I also draw on some solution focus and cognitive models (in which I have additional training) using techniques that can be very helpful with some clients, particularly when the work is short-term.

Each individual has their own unique needs and issues. This might mean working together for a few weeks or a few years or more usually, something in between. My aim is to help identify how best counselling might help you which we explore in the initial session. This is also an opportunity to see how it feels to work together before taking the decision to continue with counselling.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained with the University of Cambridge and hold an Advanced Diploma and Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling. I am a fully accredited member of BACP. Having worked in private practice for over 15 years, I have also worked for the NHS in secondary care, have 6 years experience in a university counselling service setting working with students and staff and 5 years experience as a secondary school counsellor. I work with adult clients of all different ages and from different backgrounds.

As a Family Consultant, I also work with couples (either together or individually) who are going through separation or divorce. This is a brief coaching intervention which offers not only psychological and emotional support but also practical strategies with the focus on achieving the best possible outcome for the whole family, most importantly, any children. I am a Resolution-recognised Family Consultant and an accredited Family Mediator.

I hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching and Organisation Development and work with senior and middle managers in a business environment, helping them with both their personal and professional development. This can include working to improve performance, manage transitions, develop communication skills, identify and develop leadership styles or tackle a particular work problem.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
