Counsellor Profile

The decision to seek any form of talking therapy is difficult to make but you have taken that first courageous step. From this point you will want to know more about the therapist you may work with and also to have further information about the type of therapy you ultimately decide is suitable for you.

You will want to be assured that your therapist will respect your confidence and will not judge you in any way. You will also want to be sure that they will provide a secure environment where you can confidently develop a trusting relationship in which you can explore your concerns; whatever they may be.

There are occasions when friends and family can meet these requirements for you but there are times when a professional, who has no prior involvement in your life, can offer a more objective view. In these circumstances someone who has professional qualifications will also have the training and knowledge to guide you toward the resolution of any difficulties. An experienced therapist will address your concerns sensitively; in an approachable, non-judgemental and empathic manner.

As a Counselling Psychologist I am a member of a branch of professional psychology and provide face to face individual therapy. My clients may be individuals or couples of all ages, including those who are students, who wish to deal with personal difficulties or life issues. Not all clients know exactly what specific issues they wish to address, however they do know they need to talk to someone.

Psychological therapy and counselling can be used to address anxiety, depression, relational difficulties, bereavement and loss, low self esteem and lack of confidence, stress, obsessive compulsive disorders, health issues and difficulties related to unhappiness or abuse in childhood or adulthood. These are just some examples of where talking therapy can be useful, so do not feel that any different and unmentioned issue is not equally important. Each person is an individual and each collection of concerns is equally diverse and different. Contact me to engage in a discussion that is specifically related to you as that individual.

In the same way that each client is a unique individual, each therapist will have their own specific way of working that they have developed throughout their training and practice. I choose to work in a way that combines therapeutic approaches in response to each individual client's specific concerns. If you wish to read more about these I have written some brief descriptions in the 'miscellaneous' section of this page.

Psychological therapy and counselling is based in discussion between client and therapist that explores links between past experience and current difficulties. The therapist will help you to understand your response to life events while also helping you to reflect on how you see yourself in relation to other people. They will gently guide you as you develop an understanding of your current concerns, through which process you can choose to make changes to your life that are specific to you.

Training, Qualifications & Experience (more info)

My belief is that the relationship between client and therapist is important to a successful outcome in therapeutic encounters. I therefore seek to build this bond with my clients within a safe and confidential environment.

As a Counselling Psychologist I have completed Doctorate level training at the University of Teesside over a period of four years whilst gaining extensive practical experience within the NHS. During this comprehensive and demanding course therapists are trained in all key approaches; learning a variety of therapeutic methods and ideas that are informed by current research. I am thus able to select the most appropriate and effective approach to address each client's individual and distinct needs. This level of training results in eligibility for registration with the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. Through this Chartership I am bound by the BPS Code of Ethics in my work.

As a registered member of the BPS I am required to undertake Continuous Professional Development, which I achieve through attendance at relevant seminars and workshops.

Prior to training as a Counselling Psychologist I worked for many years as a Registered Nurse within the NHS and later in palliative care and the hospice movement. I also trained and worked as a midwife within the NHS and have trained and worked with the Samaritans.

Additionally my further background is within the farming community, giving me an appreciation of the concerns of this specific group of people.

    Fees and administration

Clients may refer themselves or be referred through a GP or other health professional. Should you intend to use private medical insurance to pay for your psychological therapy you are advised to check with your insurer whether they would require the referral to be from your GP.

Your initial session is an opportunity for you to talk through your difficulties and consider with your therapist whether psychological therapy and counselling would be helpful.

If you have decided to continue psychological therapy and counselling
you will be given the earliest possible convenient appointment.
The number of sessions required would be evaluated between the client and the therapist.

Fees are £60 for individuals and £75 for couples.

Supervision services are offered for a fee of £35 per session.

In cases of genuine financial difficulty reduced fees can be discussed.

Payments for sessions (cash or cheque only) are to be made at the beginning of each session. This is to enable the therapeutic process to continue without interruption once the session has ended.

My office is situated on the outskirts of York, where there is sufficient parking for clients.

For a totally confidential discussion of therapeutic needs, to make an appointment or to discuss supervision please contact me:

    tel: 01904 470070
If I am with a client and therefore unable to answer the telephone when you call, please leave a brief message and a contact number you are happy for me to use and I will call you back as soon as possible.

    Extra Information

Clients may wish to read the following brief explanation of some of the key approaches that may be used in therapy.

    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is based in the concept that changing how you think and behave helps to change the way you feel. It aims to identify inaccurate thoughts and beliefs that are causing distress and confusion, and identifies specific agreed goals that will help you to modify behaviour, bringing about change in how you feel about yourself and your world. This is a structured approach that will involve the client in upwards of 6 sessions.

    Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy explores how past relationships and experiences have influenced current behaviour and feelings. It can help individuals with long term and recurrent problems to get to the root of their difficulties; and can also help people to get to know themselves better, resolve past issues and to improve relationships. This form of therapy is usually longer term however this is negotiated with the client while the need for continuation of sessions would be reviewed throughout.

    Integrative Approaches

This integrates a number of theoretical approaches to create a response that is tailored to the needs and concerns of the individual. While it may incorporate CBT and Psychodynamic theory these will not be the only approaches that will be utilised. There are further number of theories that can successfully be brought into the therapeutic encounter including Transactional Analysis, Gestalt and problem management approaches. The number of sessions required would be decided through discussion with the therapist of your individual needs.

I choose to work within an integrative approach that is based in the relationship between me and my client. I have found this to be successful through practical experience with many clients.
