Counsellor Profile
Tony Phillips commenced his counselling work in 1996 working in various voluntary organisations whilst completing the Certificate and Diploma in Counselling at the University of Wales (Swansea) in 1997.
My counselling work followed on from a successful career in retail management and marketing both as an employee and employer. Adytum was set up in 1996 to provide a totally confidential, safe, comfortable and caring environment to which people can bring those issues that are troubling them. Within my private practice I work with individuals, couples and groups of all ages, ranging from children and young people to adults. All issues are covered in the work that I do from depression, stress, bereavement, relationship issues, trauma, low self esteem, sexual abuse and other issues which are totally unique to each individual. I offer an assessment interview to each client where the client can find out whether they will be comfortable sharing their issues with me. If for any reason a client has issues that I do not feel competent to help with then I will always endeavour to find an alternative avenue for them to explore.
I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). I have worked for some years with Victim Support in Swansea and I am also the coordinator of the Swansea Counselling Service. I have undertaken training in many specialist areas including, rape, murder, domestic abuse and post traumatic stress. I am bound by the Codes of Ethics and Practice of the BACP.
Adopting a person centred approach is central to my therapeutic work. It is important for clients to explore their own avenues and arrive at their own solutions to the issues that confront them. It is not for me to use my own life story to address another person's problems! I have an ongoing commitment to training and my work is supervised both in peer group support and as an individual.
Along with my wife Sue, who is a qualified aromatherapist, we are also specialist foster carers for difficult to place young people. This gives me a particularly good insight into some of the issues that young people face today. I have also three children of my own - two sons, grown up and who now live away from home and a daughter of 22.

Adytum works with a variety of clients and in many settings. Adytum supports private individuals, couples and organisations. Our clients are from the age of five upwards.
The issues that we cover are never the same for any two people - the client is always a totally unique individual. However there is quite often a thread running through the problems brought to counselling that is similar to issues that other people have. Very often the strategies put in place by others can be usefully employed by our clients to assist them whilst they work through their own problems. Whilst Adytum subscribes to a person centred way of working - that is allowing the client to explore their own ways of resolving their own issues - we also understand that there are as many therapies as therapists! We have experience and training in many types of therapy including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, Transactional Analysis (TA), Existential Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis, Lifeskills Counselling and others. Our practice falls firmly into the Humanist Approach used in Person Centred Counselling. However, we unashamedly
