Profile
Experienced psychotherapist and supervisor. Having initially trained and worked as an art therapist, I then began training as a psychoanalytic therapist in my late 20s. Over the last 25 years, in addition to seeing people privately, I have been a tutor on counselling and psychotherapy courses, worked for 10 years in a university student counselling service and have provided clinical supervision for many counsellors in psychodynamic trainings, and currently for trainees at the westminster pastoral foundation. I have also worked as a clinical supervisor for 2 MIND counselling services. I have served as an editorial board member on the British Journal of Psychotherapy.

Further Information
A psychoanalytic approach involves a special kind of listening which aims to bring up your awareness of thoughts, feelings, memories which may be beneath everyday consciousness and are likely to be a significant influence on your current issues, patterns of behaviour and relating to others. As your awareness increases, your mind can grow and develop, instead of being stuck in repetitive, distressing or self-defeating patterns. Although a psychoanalytic approach understands that childhood experience is formative and significant, this is not at the expense of paying attention to your future aspirations, and the whole trajectory of your life is borne in mind.
The consulting room contains a couch as well as chairs. Some people find that using the couch relieves them of any distractions connected with face to face interaction with a therapist and helps them to reflect on their inner thoughts and feelings.
Sometimes it is beneficial to meet more than once weekly. Developing and maintaining lasting changes in life is usually a process which takes time, so quite often the agreement is to work on an open-ended basis.
I also offer brief therapy contracts of 12 sessions when appropriate.
Every psychotherapy relationship is unique. It is not done from a manual and you will not be pigeon-holed or processed according to a set formula. Coming for psychotherapy involves trusting sensitive personal material with a professional. For that reason ethics, confidentiality, safe and reliable boundaries are taken very seriously. I subscribe to the UKCP code of ethics.
