Hello, I am a BACP accredited counsellor with over 15 years of experience. I have trained in the Person Centred Approach, CBT, Narrative Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I adapt my approach to the individuals I work with and have helped people suffering from anxiety, depression, loss, stress, trauma and relationship problems at home and at work. I also work with counselling students and offer supervision to practitioners.
How does counselling work? The core or all approaches is listening and I listen out for what is hurting that needs acknowledgement, wishes that yet to be expressed but are implicit in the things you say and the strengths and resources you have to heal and grow into the person you want to become. You may need to tell me about your past but even in the first session there will be some focus on what might be a better future for you.
How you might decide on therapy with me? Most people arrange a phone consultation to tell me what they want from therapy and for me to answer any questions they have. We might then arrange a time to meet or you might get back to me when you are ready for a session. Either way I will send you an email confirming what we’ve agreed and will attach a copy of how I work within the BACP ethical framework which will cover confidentiality and my commitments to clients.
What happens in the first session? In the first session we will identify what you want and how you will recognise that you no longer need therapy. That said people sometimes have strong emotions and that need to be soothed. I have found that until I appreciate the intensity of a client’s experience and see the merit of their concerns their emotions will not diminish so I might appreciate those concerns first. With your permission I will take notes and give you a copy of them to take away. I will also ask for your feedback at the end of the session so we both can identify what might have worked better for you.
How many sessions will you need? Sometimes one session is sufficient. I am happy to see people at irregular intervals and for them to tell me when they might usefully need another session. Some people see me for a few weeks running and then space out the sessions to monthly or even quarterly meetings.
What if you can’t pinpoint what you want out of counselling? It’s enough to know that you don’t want to be in the place you are now. Together we can uncover where you would rather be.
Feel free to text me on 07771 667 594 to arrange a complimentary 15-minute phone call. Alternatively, you could send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org with your concerns and questions which I am happy to answer with no commitment on your part.
