Julie Jeffs, Psychotherapist & Mindfulness Practitoner
Psychotherapy Plymouth UK
Officers Quarters 1, 2 & 4
I have been working successfully with individuals, couples and families in private practice for over fifteen years. My approach is warm, authentic and collaborative. I work in an honest and straight forward manner and aspire to help people genuinely connect with themselves and significant others.
'EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY (EFT) for COUPLES
EFT for couples can provide a safe place for couples to talk through their difficulties and have an opportunity to feel better understood by each other. Couples often find that they can talk about their relationship issue without contradiction or interruption and without a 'fight' starting. Relationship Counselling provides time away from home and work to explore difficulties in a confidential environment in which to clarify how you think feel and react. It can support couples to listen to, understand and learn more about each other. This in itself can enhance communication which improves the quality of the relationship. Through the process of counselling couples often reconnect to feelings of love, mutual respect and fun which they had previously enjoyed.
'Suffering and joy teach us, if we allow them, how to make the leap of empathy, which transports us into the soul and heart of another person' - Fritz Williams
Couples Therapy can help couples take time out from everyday life and view their situation from a fresh perspective. It offers an opportunity to think about what they can do to change their situation for the better. It can also give couples the chance to discuss complex, sensitive or difficult issues in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
During the sessions couples are actively encouraged to slow down, listen to the other's point of view and consider more effective ways to communicate which usually involve changes in behaviour and approach.
'When we have inner peace we can be at peace with those around us' ~ Dalai Lama
'I started therapy out of desperation, having had a really bad depressive episode. I turned up for my first session with a clip board and list of things to 'do'. It wasn't long before I let go of the list and started to experience new insights into myself and my emotions. I find it hard to put into words how I feel I have developed. The warmth and trust shared in the sessions helped me begin to be comfortable with myself. No - more than that - begin to accept, trust and like myself!
I have been able to let go of old ways which weren't helpful, and recover, hold on to and cherish beautiful memories. Things which had 'stuck' in childhood, now don't grip me emotionally, I've been able to really let go. I found the sessions challenging but not threatening. I can't express how much more peaceful I feel now in my mind and in every cell of my body. I've learned how to experience and handle my emotions. I now feel better equipped to cope with the inevitable difficulties, losses and changes of life and death . '
'Just a few lines to thank you for your time spent with me over the past four years. Firstly, I have experienced a wholly supportive and compassionate rapport with you, which was quickly established from the start of therapy. You have always expressed your reflections and interpretations freely and quietly in a manner that led me into new understanding and growth, and offered insights from different perspectives that have given me confidence in my own responses and helped me with questions of values and beliefs. Your knowledge and skill have led me to some significant insights about my experience and emotional life, and put me on a new path: which may lead who knows where, but I'm in a much stronger place to explore. I know that your commitment to an ethical process will always benefit your clients first and foremost. I will take pleasure in recommending you to others.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
After calling for Julie's help we arrived on her doorstep with our marriage in the most profoundly critical condition. Our marital crisis had reached the point of no return, it really was make or break.
A year on, we are transformed from those awful days of desperation and despair, thanks to Julie's diligent attention and careful navigation of our traumatic situation. Her approach is sensitively enquiring combined with a respectful navigation of tender emotions resulting in effective communication of deeply embedded issues. Her uncanny ability to guide us back to a place where we were able to appreciate the love and respect we had for each other, and the dignity to communicate on a mutually satisfying level has been invaluable.
We still visit Julie, as we both feel that our time with her is an investment in our marriage, and offers us the opportunity to regularly 'tidy up' our marital garden, and keep the blooms within it flowering.

My early career was spent working as a manager for a large utility company, where I gained valuable business experience and an understanding of the demands and stress of a business environment.
Six years ago I established a centre for counselling and psychotherapy practice. This centre - the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre - offers psychotherapy, counselling, mindfulness training and counselling training.
Due to the expansion of the organisation I opened another practice at the Crownhill Fort in October 2013. The Fort has dedicated therapy rooms specifically for couples, families and young people. The Fort provides a quiet, spacious and comfortable environment for people to take time out to reflect and find new ways to move forward.
During the summer months the Fort is particularly beautiful and couples are welcome to stroll around the grounds to reflect and spend together after a session.
