Counsellor Profile

I offer a professional confidential counselling service in Ross on Wye, for people from all walks of life.

The way in which I work is an integration or blend of person centred, cognitive behavioural and psychodynamic counselling approaches.
This means I can take a flexible approach which is tailored to each individual clients needs. I also incorporate mindfulness meditation into the counselling, where appropriate, which has been shown to be a effective means of stress management.(see below)

What ever the approach, the essence of counselling is being truly listened to, which I believe is therapeutic in itself.
Many people find it helpful to talk in a ‘neutral’ place with someone who is not involved in their life or their problems, and who will not be upset, distressed or angered by what they might hear.

In a safe, confidential and non judgmental atmosphere, it becomes possible to explore problems and issues in a way where understanding, acceptance and empowerment become possible and solutions or ways forward are much more likely to be found.

Training, Qualifications & Experience (more info)

I have worked for over twenty years in health care initially as a Registered Nurse in hospitals, the community, hospice care and mental health.

I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling in January 2007 at The University of Wales, Newport.

During and since my training I have gained experience of counselling people with mental health and drug and alcohol problems, as well as general counselling.

I am currently studying for a master’s degree in Mindfulness Based Approaches at The University of Wales in Bangor.

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their code of ethics. I am fully insured.

    Fees

Appointments are 50 minutes long and cost £36 per session. I have 2 concessionary places for people on low incomes.
Personally if I enter into any kind of therapy I want to know that I will be able to afford it and that I wont be left wanting or needing more when the money has run out! For this reason the time we work together is always tailored to the clients needs and finances. At the outset I discuss with clients how we might work together taking into account time and financial constraints. The therapy is periodically reviewed and renegotiated so the client is always in control of the length of time we are working and the financial implications of that.
I offer a free 15minute introductory appointment to allow clients to meet me, briefly discuss how we might work together and so be able to make an informed choice as to whether they wish to proceed with counselling with me.

    Extra Information

    About Mindfulness…

Mindfulness is based on ancient meditation practices; however, it is completely non-sectarian and universally beneficial. Mindfulness practice helps us to become more aware of the present moment and so more in touch with ourselves, our feelings, emotions and our bodies. Through the development of non judgemental awareness we can learn to become more accepting of ourselves and situations as they are. It can enable us to see ourselves and situations more clearly and so in turn to act or respond more wisely.

Although Mindfulness is not a relaxation technique, it is now widely used as a means of stress reduction and when practised regularly can bring about states of deep relaxation and calm. It is also used successfully as a means of dealing with chronic pain and illness, addictions, mental health problems and has been shown to be particularly effective in preventing recurrence of depression.
I integrate Mindfulness into my counselling approach, where appropriate, by teaching basic meditation practices one to one with clients in the session, and provide guided mindfulness meditation CDs for ongoing practice at home.
I also offer introductory workshops in Mindfulness for groups – please enquire for further details.
