What do Teenagers get out of Counselling?

It's undeniable that many individuals find their teenage years challenging. Counselling can play a supportive role during this time; below are a few of the benefits that teenagers may gain through the talking therapies:

  • They can talk to an adult without being judged. Most teens spend all day in school being scrutinised, marked and told off by teachers. Knowing none of this will happen in the counselling room is a big relief.
  • This adult really listens. The teenager can unburden him/herself. Young people often say “it’s like having a weight lifted off my shoulders” after a counselling session.
  • They can talk honestly about risky behaviour, knowing that this will stay confidential unless there is risk of serious harm to themselves or someone else.
  • They can ask someone who they know is an expert the question: “Am I crazy/weird?”
  • They can be sign-posted towards other expert help and resources if it’s appropriate.
  • They get a safe space, where it really is ‘all about them’, and they don’t have to worry about upsetting anyone (unlike with their mates or their family).
  • It’s a chance to get some perspective on issues, to find out what’s really bothering them.

Counselling can sometimes provide a relaxing, creative, even fun hour in an otherwise stressful week.
