Samaritans National Awareness Day 24:7, held tomorrow (July 24th), will kick-start ‘David’s Way Round’, a 6,000-mile motorcycle ride undertaken by 64-year-old Samaritans volunteer David Exley.
The challenge, sponsored by Admiral for the third year running, will see David covering 6,000 miles in just seven weeks as he visits all 201 of the charity’s branches spread across the UK and Ireland.
The 64-year-old will even have to travel by plane and ferry to reach some of Samaritans’ most remote bases, including the Isle of Lewes in the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Man and Isle of Wight.
Volunteers, local dignitaries, celebrities and the general public will be invited to greet David at each branch with events, parties and BBQs all designed to raise awareness for the charity.
Samaritans is a confidential support service for anyone in the UK or Ireland who needs someone to talk to about the struggles of life. The 24-hour service is run by volunteers who provide support on the phone, online, or via letters – helping millions of people get back up on their feet.
The motorcycle ride will be a huge physical and emotional challenge for David, who has personal reasons for undertaking the challenge.
24 years ago, David’s younger brother Tim took his own life on Christmas Day at the age of 32. 20 years later, David’s 34-year-old son James also took his own life.
David hopes to raise £10,000 for the charity, as well as spreading much-needed awareness across the country. He believes if more people knew about Samaritans, some of the 6,000 lives claimed by suicide every year could be saved.
To support David in his challenge and to help him reach the £10,000 target mark, you can sponsor him now at Virgin Money Giving.
