New report highlights the importance of psychological therapies

A recent report which has been released by Mind as part of the We Need To Talk coalition has put pressure on the Government to ensure psychological therapies are available across the country to people who need them.

The report found that though the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) scheme has had a huge impact on waiting times for people with depression and anxiety, it also found that 1 in 5 people are still waiting for over a year to gain access to certain psychological therapies such as counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Other findings included:

  • 1 in 10 have to wait over two years for help.
  • People waiting 3 months or less from assessment to therapy were over twice as likely to be unhappy with their treatment than those who wait 10 – 11 months.
  • Individuals who wait less than 3 months from assessment to treatment were 5 times more likely to report therapy helping them get back to work than those who wait between 1 and 2 years.
  • 68% were not offered a choice of therapy.
  • Those given a choice were 3 times more likely to be happy with their treatment than those who wanted a choice but didn’t get one.
  • Those offered a choice were 5 times more likely to report therapy benefitting them and helping them back to work than those who were not given a choice.
  • Mental health issues cost the UK economy around £105 billion every year and talking therapies are known to be highly effective and successful at treating a range of mental and physical health problems. Access to psychological therapies will result in positive effects over the long term with huge economic savings that are essential in economic downturns such as the one we are experiencing now.
