America’s addiction to prescription drugs

Many American doctors claim their country is experiencing an epidemic surrounding over the counter drugs.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse has seen the use of illegal drugs and tobacco decrease over the past few years but this has gone hand in hand with the increase of prescription drug abuse.

Just a few examples would include Oxycontin, which is now referred to as hilbilly heroin due to its popularity among the working classes. Adderall, a treatment meant for ADHD, is abused by many as it is rumoured to cause significant weight loss in a short period of time.

In America it has become commonplace to simply find another doctor if one ceases prescription or even to find another source such as the internet.

Though Britain does not see prescription drugs as such a huge problem yet, there is evidence that the problem is rising. Professor Joan Busfield of Essex University has found that since 1989 the average number of prescriptions dispensed in the UK per person has doubled from eight a year to more than 16.
