Dementia patients asked to take to the stage
As part of Barnet’s new In The Limelight project, Artsdepot is inviting people over the age of 60 who are in the early stages of dementia, to step into the spotlight and take part in a variety of theatre workshops.
Along with their carers, the participants will take part in a programme of workshops which will tackle relevant themes such as reminiscence, ultimately leading to a performance to members of the public in March. Over the 12 week period the group will have the opportunity to interact and work with a professional theatre director and musician and will have the support of Artsdepot and The Alzheimer’s Society
Suzy Harvey, the workshop leader for the project, said: “I am so excited to be leading this project.”
“From my experience of performing in care homes, carers often express surprise at people’s levels of engagement as well as their lucidity and sense of humour. I’m looking forward to seeing people growing in confidence, blossoming, surprising each other and themselves and connecting with each other though reminiscence and play.”
The project is being funded by The Learning Revolution Transformation Fund and Arts Council England’s Older People’s Fund.
