Cocaine usage tops one million
Over one million people in the UK are now taking cocaine, the largest figure for 12 years, reports the Times.
The figure comes from the British Crime Survey, which also reveals that around 125,000 people are taking ketamine, a horse tranquiliser.
Over half of those taking cocaine are aged between 16 and 24, possible due to a drop in the price of cocaine, and that it is more readily available. It has now become more popular than Ecstasy.
However, because of it’s widespread use, cocaine is no longer associated with a particular group of people.
the long term damage caused by cocaine use can include heart and respiratory problems, as well as neurological effects and causing mental disturbances.
There are also fears as recently the strength of cocaine has decreased, meaning that when a user does come across a stronger batch the effects will be worse, and there is a strong possibility of an over dose.
