Call for more support for anorexia sufferers
An article on The Guardian website today written by a former anorexic is calling for more help and support for sufferers of anorexia.
Over the last decade there has been an 80% rise in those being admitted to hospital with anorexia, and out of all those diagnosed with the condition, 30% will continue to suffer from it for the rest of their lives and 20% will die from it.
The author of the article, believes that anorexia has been trivialised by it’s links to a celebrity and media based culture, when it is in fact a serious mental illness and a struggle between mind and body.
Eating disorder charity Beat believes that GPs don’t take anorexia seriously and identify it in it’s early stages, and struggle to refer patients to other places for help as resources are so limited – for every place in a specialist treatment centre, there are 100 patients.
