Workers would not disclose mental health problems to boss
Nearly half of workers would not be happy to admit to their employers that they have a mental health problem, reports The Times.
The survey, carried out by charity the Shaw Trust, revealed that out of 1,000 workers nearly 20% would not tell their HR department about a mental illness. More than half also said they felt they would get more support for a physical disability than a mental illness.
Cary Cooper, a professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, said: “People have become more comfortable talking about physical illnesses over the years, however there is still a huge stigma associated with having a mental ill health condition.”
The Shaw Trust has now set up a website to help businesses create an environment where employees fell comfortable discussing their problems: www.tacklementalhealth.org.uk.
