Mental health needs more recognition
A team of leading health experts are calling for more resources for global mental health. Statistics show that about 14% of global disease is from mental illness – that’s higher ranking than cancer and heart disease – yet the mental health charity Sane says mental health has struggled to make it onto the global health agenda.
Approximately 800,000 people commit suicide every year and it’s estimated that 90% of these have a mental disorder before taking their own life. Health experts are also calling for more recognition of the impact of mental illness on other health problems, such as the potential increased risk of alcohol abuse, smoking and poor diet.
